  • Every year, more than 700,000 Americans have a stroke, and almost one third of them are under 65.

  • Strokes are the leading cause of adult disability.

  • Strokes are the third leading cause of death behind diseases of the heart and cancer.

  • Strokes account for one of every 15 deaths.

  • On average, someone suffers a new or recurrent stroke every 45 seconds.

  • Strokes kill approximately 275,000 people a year.

  • A person dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes.

  • Those who are at higher risk are African Americans and Hispanics.
